UK: IELTS 6.0–6.5 (UG), 6.5–7.0 (PG). Canada: 6.0–6.5 (UG), 6.5–7.0 (PG). Australia: 6.0 overall no band below 5.5 (UG); 6.5 no band below 6.0 (PG). Germany English-taught: 6.0–6.5. Pakistani graduates from English-medium universities can often use a MOI letter instead of IELTS for UK universities — saving PKR 38,000–42,000.
Why IELTS Scores Matter More Than You Think
Your IELTS score is not just a checkbox on your university application — it is a requirement enforced at two separate stages: by the university itself and by the visa authority of the country you are applying to. Getting one wrong means rejection even if you pass the other.
There is also a critical detail that many Pakistani students miss: each individual band score matters as much as your overall score. A student with an overall 6.5 can still be rejected if their Writing band is 5.0. Every single sub-score — Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking — is evaluated against the university's minimum band requirement, which is typically 5.5 even when the overall minimum is 6.5.
Understanding exactly what your target country and university require before you sit your exam will save you money, time, and a great deal of stress.
IELTS Requirements by Country
The table below shows the official IELTS requirements for degree-level study in each major destination. Requirements vary by degree level, institution type, and sometimes by faculty.

| UK | Postgraduate | 6.5 | 6.0 | Some universities accept 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each band |
| UK (Top / London) | UG & PG | 7.0 | 6.5 | UCL, LSE, King's College, Imperial require 7.0+ |

Sub-Score Requirements — Where Pakistani Students Fail
The most common reason a Pakistani student gets rejected despite achieving a good overall IELTS band is a low sub-score — particularly in Writing. Here is why this matters so much in practice.
Most universities specify a minimum band score for each of the four skills: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. This minimum is usually 5.5 when the overall requirement is 6.0, and 6.0 when the overall requirement is 6.5. These thresholds are hard limits — not averages.
Among the four skills, Writing is typically the hardest for Pakistani students. This is because academic writing in English — particularly Task 2 argumentative essays — requires a distinct structure and vocabulary that differs significantly from how English is taught in Pakistani schools. Listening tends to be the easiest for most students. Speaking varies based on how much English is used at home and in academic settings.
Before booking your IELTS exam, take a full practice test under timed conditions and assess your band-by-band performance. If any individual skill is below your target band, focus your preparation there — not on the overall score.
IELTS Academic vs General Training — Which One Do You Need?
There are two versions of the IELTS test and choosing the wrong one is a costly and time-wasting mistake.
- IELTS Academic — Required for undergraduate and postgraduate university admission worldwide. This version tests your ability to engage with complex written and spoken academic language. All university applications require IELTS Academic.
- IELTS General Training — Designed for migration purposes and some vocational training programmes. It is not accepted for degree-level university admission in any country covered in this guide.
How Many Times Can You Take IELTS?
There is no limit on the number of times you can sit the IELTS exam. You can retake it as many times as you need, with no waiting period between attempts beyond the availability of test dates. Your best score is what counts — universities do not penalise you for taking the test multiple times.
In Pakistan, IELTS is administered by both British Council and IDP, with test centres in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad. Results are available within 3–5 days for computer-delivered tests and 13 days for paper-based tests.
One important new option is the IELTS One Skill Retake — a relatively recent facility that allows you to retake just one of the four sections (Reading, Writing, Listening, or Speaking) rather than the entire test. This is particularly useful if your overall score was strong but one sub-score brought you below the minimum. The One Skill Retake must be booked within 60 days of your original test date.
Alternatives to IELTS
IELTS is the most widely accepted English proficiency test, but it is not the only option. Depending on your target university and country, one of these alternatives may be accepted — and some students find them easier to achieve a high score on.
- TOEFL iBT — Accepted by most US universities and many Canadian and Australian institutions. Scored out of 120; a score of 79–80 is roughly equivalent to IELTS 6.0. Delivered on computer at Prometric test centres in Lahore and Karachi.
- PTE Academic — Accepted by most UK and Australian universities, including many that also accept IELTS. Some students find PTE easier to score on because it is entirely computer-scored, eliminating examiner subjectivity. Results are available within 48 hours.
- Duolingo English Test — An online test taken at home, accepted by some universities but not all. Always verify with your specific university before relying on Duolingo. It is not accepted by UK Home Office for visa purposes.
- MOI Letter (Medium of Instruction) — A letter from your previous school or university confirming that your prior education was conducted in English. Accepted in place of IELTS at specific UK universities including Birmingham City University (BCU) and the University of Wolverhampton. This is a significant advantage for Pakistani students who studied in English-medium schools.
Tips to Improve Your IELTS Score
These are the most effective strategies for each skill, based on what consistently works for Pakistani test-takers.
Writing (Most Important to Focus On)
Practice Task 2 essays daily. Choose a topic, set a 40-minute timer, and write without stopping. Then compare your essay against model answers and identify what is missing in terms of structure, coherence, and vocabulary range. Focus on using topic sentences clearly, developing each paragraph with specific examples, and writing a conclusion that does not simply repeat the introduction. Aim for 270–290 words for Task 2.
Speaking
The single biggest improvement comes from regular conversation practice with someone who can give you feedback on fluency and accuracy. Mock Speaking interviews — which replicate the three-part format of the real test — are particularly effective. Avoid memorising scripted answers; examiners are trained to detect them and will penalise unnatural responses.
Reading
Timed practice is essential. The IELTS Reading section gives you 60 minutes for 40 questions across three passages — roughly 90 seconds per question. Practise the skim-and-scan technique: skim each passage for structure and main ideas, then scan for specific information when answering individual questions. Do not read every word in sequence under exam conditions.
Listening
Train your ear on British and Australian accents — these are the accents used in the IELTS Listening test. BBC Radio 4 podcasts, British Council listening practice materials, and official IELTS practice tests are the best resources. Pay attention to spelling in answers, as mistakes on correctly identified answers cost marks.
